This committe works independently and in coordination with God’s Pantry and other charitable organizations to provide assistance to the community. The Social Action Committee is currently participating in the following programs:

OZS BACKPACK PROGRAM WITH GOD’S PANTRY

Do you know that amost half of Fayette county students rely on free or reduced-cost school meals?  These children shouldn’t go hungry on weekends or school breaks. God’s Pantry is partnering with OZS to assemble and deliver “backpacks” to Mary Todd Elementary. These bags are filled with food that school children can take home on weekends or school breaks.  Last year we got together about once a month, on Sundays at 11:30 AM, to perform this mitzvah.  We will resume this program at the beginning of the 2012-2013 school year.  For dates and times, go to the program link from God’s Pantry website: http://godspantry.org/aboutus/our-programs-services/the-backpack-program/ or check the bulletin.  For more information, contact Brian Derer at b.derer@insightbb.com.

 GLEANING WITH FAITH FEEDS

Ohavay Zion Synagogue participates in “Faith Feeds” which is a cooperative association of individuals and faith communities working with the Lexington Farmer’s Market to glean the market. The farmers of Farmer’s Market have agreed to donate any excess food they have from their fields and from the markets to the Maxwell Presbyterian Church (180 E. Maxwell Street). OZS has offered to provide volunteers to do this mitzvah on the fourth Tuesday of every month.  Volunteers are needed to pick up the food at about 3:00 PM on those Tuesdays at the Farmer’s Market on Broadway and Maxwell and to deliver it to Maxwell Presbyterian Church (180 E. GOD’S PANTRY – FOOD SORTING

Please join representatives from the entire Jewish community at God’s Pantry – (1685 Jaggie Fox Way, phone: 255-6592) on the third Thursday of each month, from 6:30 to 8:00 PM. We will sort food to be distributed to the homeless and assist God’s Pantry in fulfilling the needs of the hungry in Kentucky.
